Big drums, bright guitars, and bold attitude: Those are the fundamentals of Phantogram's sound, topped off by Sarah Barthel's coolly expressive voice. A singer in Siouxsie Sioux's mold, she can belt it out with the best of 'em, but she's just as likely to drop to a whisper, to make you lean in close. She and bandmate Josh Carter started out fusing hip-hop rhythms with indie-dance synths, and over the years their music has become sleek and luxe but never too polished—a little bit dangerous, even, channelling the vibe of big cities after dark. There's a good reason they call it "street beat."
