Pete Cullen Essentials

Brisbane’s Pete Cullen has established himself as a veritable Americana chameleon. His 2012 debut album, Tom Whisky Blues, dabbled in barroom country, throwback rockabilly, rambling folk, and roadhouse blues, and Cullen has only expanded his purview since then. A 2016 writing trip to America inspired the Sun Records homage of 2017’s “Elvis Talk to Jesus,” and the rootsy rock of 2019’s “High Tide” led to the amped-up honky-tonk of 2022’s “Heavy Damage,” as well as the same year’s plaintive version of “Danny Boy” with in-demand pedal steel guitarist Jy-Perry Banks. That hearty range is only appropriate for a restless songwriter who has penned fiery protest songs and shared the stage with such seminal Aussie rockers as Spiderbait and You Am I. Even after making a fiddle-stoked statement of purpose with 2024’s “Gone Country Again,” Cullen switched gears just a couple of months later for “Disco Cowboy,” referencing whisky-fuelled nights in Brisbane against convergent motifs from both halves of that title.
