Offenbach Essentials

Offenbach were the francophone flipside to their Montreal contemporaries April Wine, following a similar path from late-'60s psych-blues jammers to slick ‘80s arena rockers. Powered by the sandpaper voice of Gerry Boulet, the band adopted a more soulful, sophisticated sound in the late ‘70s without sacrificing their shaggy appeal. (“Je chante comme un coyote,” Boulet may howl on the song of the same name, but the gleaming lead guitar lines are cat-fur smooth.) And they weren't afraid to venture beyond rock entirely—check their joyous, jazzy romp through “Georgia on My Mind.”
