Christian metalcore stalwarts Norma Jean have weathered numerous lineup changes since forming in 2002. Unsurprisingly, the Georgia band excel at going with the flow and adjusting to changing sonic trends. Early on, Norma Jean’s brutality centered on throat-shredding vocals and mangled post-hardcore riffs. Over time, however, the group paired this approach with more intricate instrumentation and influences—seething metallic drone, for example, or thrashing hard rock. And despite their Christian identification, Norma Jean fit easily into the secular music world (see: songs co-written with Deftones’ Chino Moreno) without missing a beat.
