Although the Pacific Northwest was considered grunge ground zero in the ’90s, the region also spawned the spring-loaded punk band MxPx. The group—the name is short for Magnified Plaid—initially leaned toward thrashing hardcore (“Punk Rawk Show”) and the kind of sassy pop-punk favoured by Green Day (“Chick Magnet”). Bands don’t endure for decades without implementing some innovation, however—and so, as the years passed, MxPx gleefully embraced no-nonsense melodic rock (“I’m Ok, You’re Ok”) and earnest punk-power pop (the organ-freckled “Responsibility”) while maintaining a generally positive outlook, a nod to their Christian roots.
