Since the late ‘90s, Serge Robert—a.k.a. Mononc’ Serge—has reigned as the preeminent court jester of Québécois rock, amassing a vast repertoire of potty-mouthed ditties that delight in tipping over Canada’s most sacred cows. Case in point: “Céline,” a gonzo fuzz-funk critique of a certain titanic singer, or his irreverent folk-song portrait of race-car driver “Jacques Villeneuve.” But look beyond Mononc’ Serge’s scathing wit and you’ll find some cogent political commentary: The banjo-plucked “Expos, Go Back Home” may begin as a cheeky anti-baseball screed, but its real target is governments who prioritize sports-stadium funding over social services.
