Micatone Essentials

Micatone's blend of electronic music and European-bred jazz-pop casts a wide net. With their first release, 2001's Nine Songs, the Berlin band leaned heavily on digital programming: “A Part of Me” frames Lisa Bassenge's silky, longing vocals with funky squelches and splashes of static. Gradually, the group started to incorporate analog and acoustic textures, as on 2012's “Break My Heart,” which pushes punchy, Stax-flavoured guitar licks and live drums to the front, and the nostalgia-dipped “Shell Song,” which shimmers with reverberating guitar chords and strings that rekindle the dreamy lushness of '60s pop.
