Mastodon's classic-rock hooks take a back seat to their instrumental complexity and sludgy wallop. “Call of the Mastodon” weaves together technical death-metal rhythms and primitive grunts and gasps, “The Wolf Is Loose” is racing hardcore punk with space-rock vocals, and “Capillarian Quest” begins as swirling progressive metal before morphing into screeching thrash.
