Mallrat Essentials

Debuting as Mallrat in her teens, Brisbane-born singer, songwriter, and producer Grace Shaw blends bedroom pop and hip-hop into a dreamy amalgam that only heightens her heart-on-sleeve subject matter. Shaw holds her ground on 2018’s “Groceries,” detailing how she’ll go about her business until her love interest returns (or doesn’t). Collabs with Allday and kito highlight her affinity for floaty rap and dance music, respectively, while 2020’s deadpan fantasy “Rockstar” flexes her equal potential as alt-pop royalty. After taking notes from shoegaze and hyperpop on her 2025 album Light hit my face like a straight right, Shaw released an immersive cover of Lana Del Rey’s “Radio.” “It was really cool to be able to reinterpret it,” she told Apple Music. “Not just re-sing the song, but reproduce it in a way that references all these other things that I love as well. And add a bit of punch to it, to be honest.”
