A former member of the in-your-face rap trio Loud Lary Ajust, Montreal MC Lary Kidd has pursued a more soulful path since going solo in 2017, without sacrificing the no-holds-barred storytelling and frenetic Frenglish wordplay that made him a Québécois phenomenon. While his tense, trap-inflected calling-card single, “Petit Jésus,” sees him engaging the Lord above in a self-analytic conversation that’s boastful to the point of being blasphemous, later singles like the Nirvana-name-dropping “BLEACH” and the divine “Keys on the Table” wrap their mean-street narratives in sultry orchestral-soul and funk productions.
