Bringing rock star swagger to old-school hip-hop, Japanese rapper KID FRESINO sets his rhymes to arena-ready drums and ‘70s heavy metal guitar. He favours a laidback flow, whether boasting about his verbal prowess on “Champion” or getting romantic on cuts like “Love.” But this cocky nonchalance gets a serious jolt when backed by classic rock riffs or heavier passages that could be straight out of a Black Sabbath catalogue. It's an apt if unexpected pairing, as the KID fashions retro relics into rap that feels very much like the future.
