Julien Chauvin Essentials

Violinist, conductor, and Baroque music scholar Julien Chauvin has based his career largely around championing gems of the early common-practice period, from the ubiquitous to the undersung. Possessing an acute understanding of accurate performance practice, the French musician founded several ensembles—most notably, a recreation of a famed 18th-century orchestra called Le Concert de la Loge—to mount productions of Baroque and Classical works. The group’s repertoire spans arcane French concert works (see Louis-Charles Ragué and Jean-Baptiste Davaux) and hallowed orchestral repertoire from Mozart, Vivaldi, and Haydn. As a violinist, Chauvin has performed and recorded extensively on period instruments, often using gut strings, both with chamber groups and as a soloist with large ensembles.
