JP Cooper’s velvety vocals and vulnerable, poetic songs about the Middleton streets he grew up on have endeared him to artists as diverse as Gabrielle Aplin and Stormzy. After years of hard graft, Cooper finally broke through in his 30s when he was asked to write with superstar DJ Jonas Blue; their 2016 cut “Perfect Strangers” reached No. 2 in the charts. His album Raised Under Grey Skies, a trove of bruised melodies and heartrending breakup ballads, followed a year later, before he proved his versatility by teaming with Gorgon City and Yungen on the electronic-dance banger “One Last Song.”
