Joseph Bishara Essentials

While fans of scary movies may not know Joseph Bishara’s name, they’ve certainly felt the moods he creates, whether creepy and ominous or outright terrifying. A lifelong horror fan, the California-based musician worked with bands like Drown and Prong in the ’90s before becoming a composer for film. A captivating combination of eerie drones and piercing strings, his score for 2011’s Insidious launched his relationship with director James Wan. That collaboration reached a peak of intensity with Bishara’s thrilling use of vocalist Diamanda Galás for 2013’s The Conjuring. The ambient tracks on 2020’s The Spiderweb Meditations provoke subtler feelings of unease.
