John Mellencamp didn't develop his all-American sound just by growing up in Indiana. He soaked up the best music his mother country has to offer, be it the steamy funk of James Brown's “I Got You (I Feel Good),” the surreal, wild-eyed folk rock of Bob Dylan's “Visions of Johanna,” or working-class anthems like Woody Guthrie's subversive sing-along “Do-Re-Mi.”
