John Barry Essentials

Composer John Barry is often associated with another great Englishman who shares his initials: James Bond. He wrote the memorable Bond theme and scored a dozen 007 films, through to 1987's The Living Daylights. Born in York, England in 1933, Barry was first a pop songwriter and orchestral arranger for EMI Records; his early works combine his roots in big-band jazz with the hip '60s sounds of fuzz and surf guitar. His film career ultimately went well beyond Bond and he won five Academy Awards, most recently for Dances With Wolves in 1990. He died in New York in 2011.
