In 2015, at age 39, Dutch pianist and composer Joep Beving self-released his first album, Solipsism. While still applying his musical talents to advertising, he had recorded its delicate solo pieces in his kitchen while his family slept. His gentle, minimalistic compositions are shorn of excess, deftly tracing simple, affecting melodies with the concision of pop music, but his touch borrows heavily from classical tradition, and the atmosphere of his resonant lines draws inspiration from ambient sound. On subsequent albums he has enhanced his compositions with orchestral and choral arrangements and synthesizer counterpoint, but the sparkling concision of his writing still shines through.
