Since emerging in the early '90s, Janiva Magness has mainly been known for singing the blues with a throaty, sensual delivery. Yet that's a gross oversimplification of the musical ground she covers. She can also throw herself into the slow-burning late-night R&B of Donny Hathaway's "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" and slather soul and spirituality all over John Fogerty's gospel-tinged "Long as I Can See the Light." And with just as much authority, she can belt out barnstorming blues tunes like "Tired of Walking" and the dark, creeping “The Devil Is an Angel.”
