Islands Essentials

Islands seem to expand outward, conjuring up a kaleidoscopic universe of sound. Founded by The Unicorns' Nicholas Thorburn and Jamie Thompson, the Canadian band delight in incongruities, starting with their playful 2006 debut, which moves like Paul Simon's Graceland high on hip-hop. Thorburn has since led a revolving lineup through bold experiments with classical strings, synth-rock, and confessional indie pop. In 2016, Islands simultaneously released two albums: one relishing synths, the other celebrating their scrappy indie roots—more proof of these artists' invigorating depth and range.
