Of nu-metal's inaugural class, no band has undergone a more radical transformation than Incubus. Early on they unloaded frenetic, start-stop riffage and pummelling funk-fueled breakdowns. With 2001's Morning View, however, the group unveiled a whole new vision that was grounded in melodic alt-rock. On their signature hits “Drive” and “Adolescents,” singer Brandon Boyd still explores the darker recesses of the soul, but instead of surging forward with punishing heft, the band pile on layers of atmospheric fretwork, distortion, and turntable scratches.
