When Hot Chip started out, fusing winsome indie rock with slinky R&B was unheard of. But the UK band didn't stop there: Mixing bits of electro-pop, '90s dance, and classic Brill Building songwriting, they fashioned a whimsical alternate universe where different musical styles blissfully coexist. This vision of everlasting harmony begins with Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard's sweetly interlocking falsettos; add jangly guitars, tropical steel drums, and flickering disco accents to round out the idyllic picture. Whether playful or melancholy, it conveys a sense of childlike innocence.
