Hawksley Workman has a flair for the dramatic. His desire to find a stage big enough for his expansive vision prompted the singer/songwriter/producer to leave Ontario’s cottage country for bustling Toronto in the late ’90s, where he reinvented himself—with a baroque name and showstopping ideas. Since then, he’s unleashed a torrent of material, spanning cabaret stomp (“Jealous of Your Cigarette”), snarling alt-rock (“Anger as Beauty”), tipsy piano-led lullabies (“You Are Too Beautiful”), and muted indie-folk reveries (“Italy”). Workman’s chameleon-like voice, shifting to suit each genre, is as deft and adaptable as his prolific mind.
