Harold Melvin Essentials

Harold Melvin Essentials

Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes personified Philly soul with a conscience. Formed in the ‘50s, the vocal group hit its stride in the ‘70s by adding talented singer Teddy Pendergrass and working with iconic producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. On “Wake Up Everybody,” Pendergrass bellows authoritatively as he decries societal apathy, his words complemented by Gamble & Huff's dramatic, purposeful string arrangements. The ballad “If You Don't Know Me By Now” finds Melvin and the group harmonizing mournfully, and over the disco hi-hats of “The Love I Lost,” the group revels in its knack for dreamy, lyrical melodies.
