Since forming in 2009, Montreal ensemble Half Moon Run have hovered in the liminal space between rustic indie pop and majestic art rock. “Full Circle”—the arresting centrepiece of their 2012 debut, Dark Eyes—provides an instant snapshot of the band’s many strengths, as they gradually flesh out a barren acoustic melody into a dramatic, percussion-pounding crescendo. Over the years, Half Moon Run have occasionally given their folk-song foundations a more modernist makeover—2019’s “Favourite Boy” splits the difference between sleek yacht-rock grooves and dreamy indie-goth guitars—but their radiant group harmonies always serve as the beacon that orients their musical explorations.
