Editors' Notes With instruments ranging from bagpipes to bodhran, Great Big Sea don't hide their Newfoundland roots. On the contrary: the band made a name for itself by delivering high-octane, rocking versions of traditional folk songs and sea shanties, which are tied to Irish, English, and Cornish (and sometimes French) musical traditions. Known for their explosive live shows, Great Big Sea cast a mighty shadow on the maritime scene: They've won so many trophies at the East Coast Music Awards that, in 2001, they decided to remove themselves from the ballot! Charismatic helmsman Alan Doyle led his merry band of brothers on an adventure that lasted more than two decades and took them all over the world, but in 2013 the departure of founding member Séan McCann put the band's future in question.
