Grandaddy Essentials

Grandaddy Essentials

Both forward-thinking and achingly nostalgic, Granddaddy were one of the most innovative acts to come out of the '90s indie-rock boom. The Modesto, CA, group channelled the winsome longing of Neil Young and the boundary-pushing arrangements of The Beatles, but updated these classic-rock touchstones with modern concerns and production. "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot" is a fractured lullaby for the 21st century, while "The Crystal Lake" is a tale of alienation buoyed by shimmering keyboard whooshes. Like their idols though, Granddaddy were also capable of unbridled joy, as heard in the digital-sunshine bounce of "Now It's On."
