Bill Gaither took contemporary Christian music to a bigger audience than ever with the cottage industry he created, and the Gaither Vocal Band's Southern gospel sound is a huge part of that. Following some personnel changes, the quintet started gaining widespread popularity in the '90s, showing old-school gospel could still command attention. They specialize in traditional hymns and gospel numbers like "John the Revelator" and "I'll Fly Away," where five vivid voices blend into one with a classic-sounding gospel band pumping up the excitement, but they have a way with more modern tunes like the pop-tinged "Chain Breaker" too.
