Felix Cartal Essentials

Felix Cartal grew up playing in punk bands, so when he discovered the aggressive sound of 2000s electro, the transition came naturally. “To me that sounded like punk-rock electronic,” he tells Apple Music. “Like the band music that I like, but totally refreshing and new.” Cartal (a.k.a. Taelor Deitcher, born in Vancouver, BC, in 1987) started out making mischievous electro-house for labels like Dim Mak, but he soon shifted to expansive fusions of futuristic house and heartfelt pop. His versatility has proven one of his chief virtues: He regularly flips his most radio-ready anthems into slower, deeper, and dreamier versions under the “Sunset Mix” tag. His 2023 album Into Sunsets gathered these remixes and other forays into chill and rounded them out with a few main-stage anthems for good measure—because if there’s one thing certain about Felix Cartal, it’s that he refuses to be pinned down.
