The very concept of alt-metal began with Faith No More. Disrupting expectations since the '80s, the ensemble is dedicated to two things: uncompromising sonic experimentation and conceptual absurdity. Frontman/screamer Mike Patton and crew pull off both the body-slamming funk-metal anthem “Epic” and a cover of the soft-soul nugget “Easy” that's so faithful—yet fuzzy—it's unnerving. Faith No More also boast a dark side—laced with cryptic sociopolitical lyrics and lavishly baroque piano runs, 2015's “Superhero” is a maddeningly fidgety transmission from the psychic abyss.
