Died Pretty Essentials

Died Pretty cut a distinctive figure in Australian music, striking upon a dark, florid strain of baroque rock that hung on chiming layers of keyboards and guitar jangle combined with the equally rich, ringing voice of frontman Ron S Peno. The Sydney band's 1991 gem “D.C.” hews much closer to early R.E.M. than to the grunge exploding at the time, while their unabashed '60s influences come to a head on the Doors-meets-Dylan fever dream “Stoneage Cinderella.” Even “Sweetheart,” which begins with a lingering '80s drum sound, is a feat of desperate romantic brooding that sounds decades older—right down to its almost operatic flourishes.
