In addition to his revered quartet, free-jazz saxophonist David S. Ware employed a handful of novel ensembles. These include a string group who specialized in harmonically dense meditations (“Ananda Rotation”) and a trio who focused on tense, rhythmic interplay (“#6 B”). Ware also performed solo, resulting in long-form works like “Minus Gravity 2,” which features circular melodies furiously played by a sopranino saxophone.
