After giving rock stardom a shot with the ridiculously named Humphrey Salade in the '80s, Québec singer/songwriter Daniel Bélanger started the next decade with the stunning Les insomniaques s'amusent, a sophisticated blend of folk and pop that is justly considered as a milestone in modern francophone music. As a matter of fact, an entire generation credit him and Jean Leloup for making it cool to sing in French. Widely acclaimed by fans and critics alike, the album produced five hit singles. To his credit, Bélanger never stuck to an easy formula, releasing challenging material like the ambitious concept album Déflaboxe and integrating electronic sounds into his music, which he did extensively on the gorgeous Rêver Mieux. He also wrote the music to the massively successful musical Belles Soeurs, and in 2013, he ditched all modern machinery on the rootsy, rockabilly-inspired Chic de ville.
