Combining post-hardcore, post-punk, and post-rock, this Toronto-via-Guelph band broods as intensely as they rock. Since forming in 1999, the Constantines have released moody and menacing music powered by a Fugazi-inspired rhythm section, intricate keyboards, and Bry Webb's husky howls, which balance a Joe Strummer-esque snarl with a dusky gloom reminiscent of Nick Cave—see the ominous skulk of "Insectivora." But as noisy and raw as they can get, some of their best moments rise from intricate, tension-building rock ("Shine a Light"), and the occasional hint of Springsteen ("Young Lions").
