In the late '70s and early '80s, a group of D.I.Y. punks from Washington, D.C. launched one of the most prolific and committed hardcore scenes in the US. Early D.C. bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat played blisteringly fast, aggressive songs, but as the decade went on, introspective emo pioneers like Embrace and Rites of Spring created a new kind of intensity with their passionate performances.
