Through the ‘00s, Canadian indie rock was synonymous with stage-crowding, cheerily socialist collectives banging the drum for the sound of the country's underground. But in their wake, a new generation of bands—Tokyo Police Club, Arkells, and Japandroids among them—has emerged with more populist intents, redefining the sound of modern Canadian rock by applying blue-collar ideals to their arena-sized ambitions.
