Britpop is a catch-all term that first appeared around 1993, both as a reaction to American-born grunge and as a way for the English press to easily talk about a rise in homegrown talent. Outside of that, this new era had no signature sound with the glam jangle of Oasis, Elastica's New Wave swagger, the punkish energy of Supergrass, and Pulp's art pop all falling under this handy category.
