Basia Bulat Essentials

Basia Bulat was only 22 when she cut her 2007 debut album, Oh, My Darling, but the Toronto-raised singer-songwriter has had an ageless sound from the start. On that release and its 2010 follow-up, Heart of My Own, her folkie inclinations came to the fore with an added dash of indie pop. Tall Tall Shadow and Good Advice, produced by Arcade Fire’s Tim Kingsbury and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, respectively, found Bulat’s formerly stripped-down settings growing increasingly cinematic. Whether she’s playing acoustic guitar, piano, autoharp, or ukulele, delivering a hushed ballad or something more sweeping, Bulat bears a honeyed shimmer of a voice that transcends idiom and connects straight to the spirit.
