Saxophonist Archie Shepp has always ignored the line between experimentation and his love of jazz tradition. Since the early ‘60s he's lent that spirit to countless contexts, finding common cause with South African pianist Dollar Brand on “Barefoot Boy from Queens Town to Mongezi,” bringing out the blues in Thelonious Monk's “Blue Monk,” and injecting new life into the standard “Sweet Georgia Brown” alongside Swedish saxophonist Lars Gullin.
