Amanda Shires Essentials

A versatile voice in modern Americana, Nashville’s Amanda Shires (born in Lubbock, Texas in 1982) lends equally adaptable fiddle-playing to her emotionally rich work. Both on her own and as a longtime member of husband Jason Isbell’s backing outfit The 400 Unit, Shires deftly modifies her work to change with the vibe and sound of each track. She leads her own band through pronounced fluctuations in light and dark on 2013’s reverb-soaked “Bulletproof,” and channels the tremulous vocal delivery of Dolly Parton over burnished piano and strings on 2022’s “Empty Cups.” And as one-quarter of the supergroup The Highwomen—along with Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, and Maren Morris—Shires proves just as adept at classic country harmonizing as she is at incorporating modern indie-rock elements like burbling synthesizer on 2018’s “Leave It Alone.” Even through all those pronounced shifts, her words and playing always ring true.
