Like her husband, John Coltrane, pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane sought to express spirituality in music, which she exercised in an eclectic series of albums in the '60s and '70s. Coltrane found strength and versatility in her chosen instruments, and with a rotating list of all-star players like Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp, her music explored exotic instruments and dreamlike passages approached the improvisational heights achieved by her husband. Coltrane's recordings were infrequent in the '80s and '90s, but she explored electronic music in the 2000s before her death in 2007.
