About Randy Weston
The style of jazz pianist Randy Weston sprang from two tributaries -- Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. Like them, Weston was economical, slyly melodious, and somewhat percussive. Weston was also one of the first jazz musicians to overtly incorporate aspects of African music into a hard bop-oriented approach. His piano shone in a range of contexts, from solo to small group to orchestral, as well as with African musicians.
