About Matt Holubowski

French-Canadian songwriter Matt Holubowski has explored sparse folk and lush, intricate indie pop with his gentle, nimble voice. Born in the Montreal suburb of Hudson in 1988, the bilingual Holubowski released his debut album, Ogen, Old Man, in 2014, establishing a sensitive vision that he wrapped in stripped-down, finger-picked acoustic guitar. This album included meditations on the weight of time (“Old Man”) and profound connections between people (“Mango Tree”). Solitudes, from 2016, was inspired in part by Hugh MacLennan’s novel Two Solitudes about the disconnect between Canada’s French and English populations. Solitudes expanded Holubowski’s sound into blossoming orchestral arrangements, with strings sweeping through “Exhale / Inhale” and atmospheric guitar weighing heavy on “The King.” Weird Ones, his 2020 ode to strange interiorities, provided a perfect balance between his earthy and otherworldly impulses, navigating inner landscapes with songs both dreamy and grounded.
