About múm
Since the late 1990s, Icelandic pop experimentalists Múm have combined sophisticated musical ideas with a playful sense of wonder. Their intermingling of intricate electronic textures, often acoustic instrumentation, and winsome melodies -- which arrived more or less fully formed on 1999's Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK -- led to Múm being categorized as leaders of the folktronica movement. However, their music was always less predictable than that style implied. They added filmic drama to 2002's Finally We Are No One and adopted a brighter, livelier sound on 2007's Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy, which the band made after the departure of original vocalists Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir. When Múm returned with 2025's History of Silence -- their first album since 2013's Smilewound -- they coupled their enduring mystique and passion for experimentation with some of their most thoughtful songwriting.
