About Johnny Gill
A stalwart of new jack swing, singer Johnny Gill is known for his work in New Edition, his prolific solo output, and his stint in the R&B supergroup LSG, also featuring Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat. • Gill’s career took off in 1982, when a demo he recorded landed him a deal with Atlantic Records. His debut album, Johnny Gill, came out the next year, and the single “Super Love” went Top 40 on the Billboard R&B chart. • He released Perfect Combination, a duet album with Stacy Lattisaw, in 1984, followed by a second solo album, Chemistry, in 1985. • In 1987, he was tapped to replace Bobby Brown in the popular R&B boy band New Edition. His first album with the group, 1988’s Heart Break, showed off a more mature sound and went double platinum. • Gill capitalized on his newfound fame with another self-titled solo album in 1990, becoming a bona fide star of the popular new jack swing style. The LP spawned three No. 1 R&B hits: “Rub You the Right Way,” “My My My,” and “Wrap My Body Tight.” • Later in the ’90s, while still recording solo and with New Edition, Gill linked up with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat to form the trio LSG, which released two albums: Levert.Sweat.Gill (1997) and LSG2 (2003). • After a 14-year hiatus as a solo artist, Gill returned in 2011 with Still Winning. The album went Top 5 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Game Changer and Game Changer II followed in 2014 and 2019, respectively.
