John Sherba

About John Sherba

The longtime second violinist of the Kronos Quartet, John Sherba is an enthusiastic supporter of new music. In 1978, he joined the Kronos Quartet for what would become a more than 45-year venture. His first of many recordings with Kronos came the following year, featuring string quartets by Dane Rudhyar. Among the group's numerous collaborators is composer Terry Riley, whose music they have recorded for several albums including 2019's Sun Rings. Other composers who have been featured on the group's recordings include such notable 20th and 21st century composers as Philip Glass and Steve Reich but go well beyond that sphere with music by the likes of Thelonious Monk and Pete Seeger. Following the group's 50th anniversary season, Sherba retired from the Kronos Quartet. With Kronos, Sherba was part of a massive commissioning scheme, which, by the mid-2020s, numbered more than 1,100 new works.
