About Horsepower

Formed in 1978 by veteran American guitarist Mike Kennedy (previously a member of Nicky Hopkins' band, among other projects), Horsepower started life in Philadelphia before relocating to the U.K. and being "discovered" by former Animals bassist and onetime Jimi Hendrix manager Chas Chandler. Also featuring lead vocalist Steve Richter, guitarist Rob Saltzman, bassist Buddy Cash, and drummer Jack Daley, Horsepower proceeded to hitch a ride on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal bandwagon when their hard rocking composition "You Give Me Candy" was chosen to appear on 1980's very influential Metal for Muthas, Vol. 2 compilation. A single deal with Island Records subsidiary Square followed, and most people believe that the resulting Outrageous 7" was Horsepower's final gasp, but in truth, Kennedy and company continued to perform sporadically, even after returning to the U.S. later in the decade. Now based in Philadelphia, the group issued a Chandler-produced LP called Stoked! in 1994, and word is that an updated lineup still featuring Kennedy and Richter remains active to this day. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
