- Carrie Underwood has one of the biggest voices in country. Few can storm a chorus with such gusto—or tiptoe out with so delicate a vibrato. This combination of power and restraint helped her win the fourth season of American Idol, but she's revealed herself to be less diva than storyteller. On "Before He Cheats," a revenge tale involving a baseball bat, slashed tires, and apocalyptic fiddle, she's both. "Something in the Water," meanwhile, tells the wholesome story of a Christian conversion with down-home banjo and operatic production. As usual, Carrie's voice comes out on top.
- Carrie Underwood plays a lot of roles from song to song, and her videos bring those characters to life. “Before He Cheats” depicts her as a scorned, baseball-bat-wielding woman, while “Something in the Water” has her as a rain-drenched salvation-seeker. The "All-American Girl" clip may just hit closest to home, with Underwood embodying all her various personas in the same video.
- Carrie Underwood says her REFLECTION residency reaches beyond the confines of a concert. In typical Vegas fashion, it’s a full-blown spectacle. “We wanted a show that’s worthy of the heart and energy of Nashville and the glitz and glamour of Vegas,” she tells Apple Music. “That’s our goal every night.” The special effects are aplenty: A truck is set on fire, fans’ bachelorette parties are celebrated, a virtual orchestra performs, and there’s even a waterfall finale—all things she says she wouldn’t be able to pull off on a tour, but which work just fine in a customizable Vegas stage. “We are definitely able to do things on the Resorts World Theatre stage that we couldn’t put on a truck and move from city to city,” she says. “This show really is a reflection of my career so far, celebrating the hits that everyone has come to know and love. It’s one of the most fun shows I’ve ever done. We have such a great time onstage every night.”
- Carrie Underwood's style of country music combines the twang of Reba McEntire and the attitude of arena rock, with some pop and gospel thrown in for good measure. Martina McBride's “Wild Angels” employs the same kind of big-voiced religious imagery that Underwood would evoke in her own music, while the thumping drums of Pat Benatar's “Fire and Ice” make it easy to see why Carrie decided to cover her on American Idol.
- Just like the neighbour who hangs up the Christmas lights before anyone else, Carrie Underwood jumped early into the holiday spirit with the release of her seventh studio album My Gift. “I feel like I've been celebrating Christmas all year,” the country mainstay tells Apple Music about keeping herself optimistic in spite of this year’s challenges. “We persevered, and created some stuff that I'm really proud of. And for me and for my own mental and emotional well-being, it was great getting to go into the studio and sing these uplifting songs. It made me feel happy.” This exclusive Apple Music playlist curated by Underwood herself contains some of her favourite tracks from My Gift to get you back into that festive mood, represented here alongside other non-holiday choice cuts from the likes of Machine Gun Kelly, NF, Foo Fighters, and Chris Stapleton. “He's kind of the anti-country star,” Underwood says of the latter. “He has this incredible voice. You feel everything that he's saying, and then couple that with how he's so honest and says things simply, but to the point.”
