About Benji Myaz

b. Benjamin Myers, 16 April 1968, Jamaica, West Indies. Myaz had worked behind the scenes within the Jamaican music industry prior to embarking on his singing career. He was noted for his bass guitar playing as well as writing and producing songs. He first came to prominence as a Jamaican lovers rock singer in 1995 when he released, ‘Love You Higher’. The song proved sufficiently popular to warrant its release as a CD single, which at the time was only bestowed on hits considered liable to crossover into the mainstream. The smooth-voiced Myaz continued to maintain his profile with ‘Shine On’, an upbeat number that embraced the feel-good factor. His vibrant popularity resulted in him being elected to perform at MIDEM 97 in France, where he represented Jamaica with a commendable presentation. Following the event he embarked on recording his debut, Intimate Relationship. The album featured the hit ‘Love You Higher’, alongside a version of ‘Don’t Ask My Neighbors’, with the appealing ‘Show Your Love’ and the ardent title track. The release was met with critical acclaim and enhanced by the inclusion of combinations alongside Junior Jazz and Freddie McGregor. Myaz promoted the set on a tour of Japan with McGregor and Yeshemabeth (McGregor’s daughter), with musical support from the inventive Gumption Band. While in Japan Myaz promoted his follow-up Time Together, which was a mélange of different styles. The album proved a success with his Japanese followers, although he was unable to sustain the same enthusiasm in Jamaica. The album was distributed through twenty four seven and featured ‘Intimate Relationship’ as a bonus track.
