The Lost Chapters, Vol. 2

The Lost Chapters, Vol. 2

For his second instalment of The Lost Chapters, Hatebreed vocalist Jamey Jasta has assembled an all-star cast of guest vocalists to collaborate on a powerhouse collection of metal and hardcore tracks. (Plus a special guest shredder on the closing Megadeth cover.) From the brutal death metal attack of Cannibal Corpse’s George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher to the soaring, anthemic approach of current and former Killswitch Engage vocalists Jesse Leach and Howard Jones, Jasta took inspiration from his Jasta Show podcast to create an album with the feel of a compilation. “I wanted to make it like a playlist,” Jasta tells Apple Music. “The songs have vocalists from all different subgenres of metal, so they all sound completely different.” They Want Your Soul (feat. George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher) “I'm doing this melodic sort of metal chorus on this song, so I wanted to get the dynamic of the most brutal vocal in the verses. I reached out to George and he hit me right back. When he sent me the tracks, I was freaking out. I felt like a kid; when I booked my first Cannibal Corpse show with George in the band, it was the first tour that he did with them. His voice is just so brutal and has held up—if not gotten better—throughout the years. I was so psyched that he wanted to do it.” Return From War (feat. Max Cavalera) “This song deals with PTSD and was kind of loosely inspired by soldiers from Vietnam, where they didn't necessarily feel like what they were doing there was right. I reached out to Max because I knew that he was into war imagery, and I know Sepultura and Soulfly deal with darker topics—that’s something we talked about on my podcast. He was available and he loved it. It’s a banger. It’s one of my favourites.” Strength to Draw the Line (feat. Jesse Leach) “This one is what I call a ‘certified pit hit.’ It’s got the most streams of all the songs we’ve put out so far, and it’s a real ripper. I wrote a bridge for it that sounds like a Killswitch Engage bridge because I don’t get to do that stuff in Hatebreed, where I really stick to the fast hardcore stuff. This is more like a groove-metal type song. I hit up Jesse and he loved it. This song is part of a trilogy, but I’ll leave fans to guess which one is the prequel and which one is the sequel.” Cleansed by the Waves (feat. Zoli Teglas) “This song has a real melodic, old-school hardcore vibe with the crunch and heaviness of new-school hardcore. It’s a great, catchy song, but I needed a melodic hardcore vocal on it. I had tracked it 100 percent and it sounded good, but I thought people might think it’s too different from what they’re used to hearing from me. So I asked Zoli if he’d want to do it. I love Ignite—they’re one of my favourite bands. I booked their first East Coast tour in ’95, so I’ve known Zoli for over half my life. He sang in Pennywise and filled in with The Misfits and he really took this track to the next level.” When the Contagion Is You (feat. Matt Heafy) “This one’s already charting. It’s crazy to see my name on the active rock chart. Matt’s band Trivium has had success at active rock, but with Hatebreed it’s been a struggle because of the name and the sound being so brutal. When I asked Matt to collaborate on this song, he literally did it the same day. And he live-streamed it on Twitch, which is pretty cool. He’s an amazing artist, and just one of the most professional and kind people I got to work with, which is really inspiring.” Spilled Blood Never Dries (feat. Kirk Windstein) “This song was originally written for a female vocalist, but she didn’t end up using it; she was looking for a really doomy, heavy type of song. When she didn’t use it, I thought, ‘If I put Kirk on this, it would sound like a Kingdom of Sorrow song.’ And I thought maybe it would be a way to drum up interest in our side project. So far, so good: I was just reading my Twitter and saw a bunch of tweets saying, ‘Now you have to do another Kingdom of Sorrow record.’ So I hope this sparks that.” Heaven Gets What It Wants (feat. Howard Jones) “This song is a monster. I wrote the chorus and originally sent it to another singer but never heard back. And then in talking with Nick, the drummer and co-producer who did such a great job on this, he’s like, ‘Can’t you do another one with Howard?’ I already did that on the first Lost Chapters, but Nick was like, ‘Howard is going to knock this out of the park. His voice is going to fit this perfectly.’ So Howard came in and I got goosebumps while he was tracking it. It’s incredible.” Silence the Enemy Mind (feat. BillyBio) “This one is actually something we were joking about on the podcast. We were talking about gang vocals and the best gang vocals of all time, and I said I wanted to do a song that’s like total Biohazard with those Biohazard gang vocals. And then I thought, ‘Why can’t I get Billy on this?’ I’ve known him for years, and we’ve toured with Biohazard. This song also charts new territory: It has the first-ever gang vocal ‘blegh,’ done by me, Howard Jones, Chris Beaudette, who plays bass in Jasta, and Charlie [Bellmore], who plays in Dee Snider’s band.” Just Breathe (feat. Frankie Palmeri) “I originally sent another song to Frankie, and he did a great job, but it’s going on the new Body Count album. They heard the song and they loved it, and Ice [T] hit me up and was like, ‘Yo, I need this song.’ So I said to Frankie, ‘I'm sorry, man—I got to have you do another song.’ And then this one turned out incredible. I think it's going to have a great reaction in a live setting. And I love what Frankie did—I really think it's a very strong pit anthem.” Our Guardian Angel (feat. Phil Rind) “I hit up Charlie Bellmore, who plays in Dee Snider’s band, and was just in Kingdom of Sorrow with me. I wanted to do a total Seasons in the Abyss Slayer-style song for this record. So he sent me these two parts he had, and I wrote a bridge and started messing with the melody and the verses. As I was doing that, I was doing my thrash countdown podcast, and I put Sacred Reich in my top 50 thrash countdown. I had just seen Phil with Sacred Reich in Europe and they were killing it. So I thought, ‘I can totally hear Phil singing this part.’ And he knocked it out of the park.” 13 Appears (feat. Tommy Victor) “I co-wrote this song with Doc [Coyle] from Bad Wolves. Tommy is one of our favourite podcast guests—I have him on at least two or three times a year—so we got him to do the track. I originally put this up on my Jasta HQ Bandcamp page, and people loved it, but we redid the drums for the album and I think it came out really cool.” Holy Wars...The Punishment Due (feat. Joey Concepcion) “Strangely enough, we ordered dumplings at the studio one night and Joey delivered them from the Chinese restaurant. He gave me his CD, and the next day I put it in my stereo and was like, ‘Oh my god—this kid is the next Zakk Wylde!’ So he came on a European Jasta tour with me and people were like, ‘Who’s this kid? He’s amazing.’ But I wanted to cover this Megadeth song because…look, I love Metallica. I love Slayer. I love Anthrax. But the greatest, most dynamic thrash song of all time is ‘Holy Wars.’ There’s no other song like it.”
