Seldom has there been a more literal example of “world music” than Subcontinental Drift. Between Lebanese-Canadian fiddler Chris McKhool’s mercurial riffing and Cuban percussionist Rosendo “Chendy” Leon’s percolating patterns, Sultans of String command a joyful blend of international styles. On this album they maximise the presence of guest sitarist Anwar Khurshid, combining his Eastern sounds with folk and country on “Enter the Gate” and a version of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Bollywood soundtrack.
